Os primeiros selos especializados em Heavy Metal surgiram a partir de 1980 e sem dúvida, a Metal Blade de Los Angeles foi uma das principais gravadoras que incentivou o Heavy Metal principalmente devido ao amor pelo metal de seu fundador, Brian Slagel.
Os lançamentos incluem discos lendários de Slayer a Amon Amarth, de Voivod a Fates Warning, de Goo Goo Dolls a Cannibal Corpse, e muitos outros.
